ANOTHER, THE OTHER, OTHER, OTHERS, THE OTHERS

Kata ‘OTHER’ digunakan dengan berbagai variasi, antara lain: another, the other, other, others, the others. Kata other dengan berbagai variasinya bisa berfungsi sebagai kata sifat (adjective) maupun kata ganti (pronoun). Berikut ini adalah contoh posisi bentukk-bentuk other yang berfungsi sebagai kata sifat maupun sebagai kata ganti.

ANOTHER

Another digunakan dengan maksud untuk menyebutkan satu lagi sebagai tambahan benda yang telah kita sebutkan sebelumnya. Another digunakan bersama dengan kata benda tunggal. Kata another bisa berfungsi sebagai kata sifat (adjective) maupun kata ganti (pronoun).

Example :

·         I have four pens. Two pens are for Andi. One pen is for you. Another pen is for your sister.

Note: kata another dalam kalimat diatasberposisi sebagai kata sifat (adjective)  yang menerangkan kata benda pen.

·         Look I have two rabbits. One rabbit is white. Another is grey.

Note: kata another dalam kalimat diatas berfungsi sebagai kata ganti (adjective)

Another dapat berarti suatu alternatif, besides these/this (disamping ini).

Example :

·         I have many magazine. One of the magazines is TEMPO. Another magazine is MATRA. Another is SARINAH

·         I don’t want this magazine. I want another

·         He doesn’t know her adress. Let’s ask another

THE OTHER

Kata the other kita gunakan ketika ingin menyebutkan benda kedua dari pasangan benda yang telah kita sebutkan atau yang sudah kita ketahui.

Example:

·         I have three magazines. Two are TIMES and Newsweek. The other magazine is Asiaweek.

Note: pada kalimat diatas kata other sebagai kata sifat yang menerangkan kata benda magazine. Kalimat “The other magazine is Asiaweek”bisa diganti dengan “The other is Asiaweek”. Namun dalam kalimat ini, kata other berfungsi sebagai kata ganti.

·         I have five magazines. One is SARINAH. The other magazines are TEMPO, MATRA, POPULAR and WANITA.

·         I have two magazines. If you don’t like this one, you can have the other.

·         Two policemen were on patrol, one behind the other.

OTHERS

Others kita gunakan jika kita ingin menyebutkan beberapa benda lagi sebagai tambahan dari benda yang kita sebutkan sebelumnya. Kata others berfungsi sebagai kata benda jamak.

Example:

·         I have many friends. One of my friends is from Yogyakarta. Another friend is from South Sumatera. Another is from West Java. Other friends are from Jakarta. Others are from East Java.

·         These magazines are very expensive. I want others.

·         They are very tired, so I want to find others.

THE OTHERS

Kita menggunakan the others jika yang kita maksudkan adalah semua benda yang terisi dari jumlah tertentu atau sisa dari sekelompok benda atau orang tertentu.

Example:

·         Andri has five magazines. One is SARINAH. The other magazines are TEMPO and MATRA. The others are POPULAR and WANITA.

·         I want to buy these magazines. I don’t want the others

·         Endra has arrived, I will tell the others.

EACH OTHER and ONE ANOTHER

Kata each other dan one another kita gunakan untuk menyebutkan dua benda/orang yang memiliki hubungan timbal balik. (reciprocal relationship)

Example:

·         We send an SMS to each other everyday

·         We send an SMS to one another everyday
